Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about the Brock litigation, the December 2027 deadline, privacy, and what any of it means for a former patient.
A reminder about what these are
Everything described below concerns allegations in pending civil litigation that has not been decided. Dr. Brock has denied all allegations of impropriety. Nothing here is legal or medical advice.
Who is Dr. Barry J. Brock?
Barry J. Brock, M.D. is an obstetrician-gynecologist who practiced in the Beverly Hills and Los Angeles area for roughly four decades and held clinical privileges at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He retired from medicine in August 2024 and surrendered his California medical license effective June 11, 2025. He has been named in civil lawsuits by former patients alleging sexual abuse during examinations, and has denied all allegations of impropriety.
How many women have sued Dr. Brock?
Filings began in October 2024 with 35 plaintiffs. By the end of December 2024 the reported figure was 167. In June 2025 reporting placed the total at at least 176, and in October 2025 an additional 112 women filed, bringing the publicly reported total above 280.
Was Dr. Brock criminally charged?
No criminal charges have been reported. The matters against him are civil lawsuits, which have not been tried or decided.
Did Dr. Brock lose his medical license?
He surrendered it. He signed a stipulated agreement in late May 2025 and the surrender took effect June 11, 2025. Importantly, the Medical Board accusation that preceded it concerned negligent care of a single patient in 2018 — including allegations that he performed a procedure without gloves and without a chaperone — not a Board finding of sexual assault. A surrender is not a criminal conviction or an admission.
What is Cedars-Sinai accused of?
The complaints allege that Cedars-Sinai received complaints about Dr. Brock over many years and failed to investigate or act, which plaintiffs characterize as a decades-long cover-up. These allegations are unproven. Cedars-Sinai has said the alleged behavior is counter to its core values, and that it suspended his privileges in July 2024 and terminated them that September.
Is there a deadline to file a claim?
California AB 250, signed October 13, 2025, opened a revival window running from January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027 for certain adult sexual assault claims that were already time-barred, where a private institution is alleged to have concealed prior misconduct. Whether it applies to any individual depends on their specific facts, which only a lawyer can assess.
I was a patient but I am not sure anything improper happened. Should I do anything?
Many people in this situation spent years assuming a medical examination was normal. That doubt is the expected response to being examined while undressed and alone by someone with medical authority — it is not evidence that a concern is unfounded. You can request your medical records, which commits you to nothing, and you can consult a lawyer without filing anything.
Can I file anonymously?
California courts routinely permit plaintiffs in sexual assault cases to proceed under a pseudonym, and many complaints in this matter have been filed that way. It is a request a court grants rather than an automatic right, and the defendants will still learn your identity even if the public record does not carry your name.
What if I do not have my medical records?
Records from the 1980s and 1990s are often no longer retained, and that is common rather than disqualifying. Insurance claim histories, explanation-of-benefits statements, later physicians’ charts, pharmacy records and personal calendars can all help establish when and where you were treated.
How much does it cost to talk to a lawyer about this?
Cases of this type are typically handled on contingency, meaning no fee unless there is a recovery, and initial consultations are generally free. A consultation is also covered by attorney-client privilege whether or not you hire the lawyer.
Has there been a settlement?
No. As of the last update to this page there has been no global settlement, no trial verdict, and no criminal prosecution reported. The civil cases are pending.
What was the UCLA case and is this the same?
The litigation over Dr. James Heaps at UCLA involved similar allegations and resolved through settlements totaling nearly $700 million. It is the closest California precedent, but UCLA is a public institution, the facts differ, and one case’s settlement does not predict another’s outcome.
Where did Dr. Brock practice?
He was associated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he held clinical privileges, as well as affiliated practices including Beverly Hills OB/GYN and Rodeo Drive Women’s Medical Group.
